New Year’s Vasilópita (which means “bread of Saint Basil”) is a round bread that has the new year’s numbers on its surface made of dough and contains a hidden coin. The bread is cut on New Year’s Eve at midnight or on New Year’s Day and the recipient of the piece which contains the hidden coin will have good luck and blessings for the New Year. This sweet yeast bread is flavored with mahlepi and mastica and delicious toasted with butter.
